“We decided we had no dental appointments or study halls, so we would play football and do our jobs”
Mike Leach might be the funniest, one-of-one kind of guy, and yet he’s also the most overhyped coach of this generation.
Everyone gives Coach Leach big ups for his work at Washington State despite lacking sustained success, and everyone loves to point out that he made Texas Tech relevant. However, when my Dawgs hired him, all the analysts said that he only needed a defense to become a championship coach.
Well since we gave him a top ten defense last year, he provided a dismal offense that couldn’t move the ball at all on Alabama and threw away the game against Arkansas. This year, we started bleak. We went down huge to LA Tech and barely pulled out the dub.
You can say, LA Tech returned 10 of their defensive starters from their previous season, but those guys were one bottom feeders in the American conference in 2020.
You could say they had a dozen offensive transfers, but we returned a dominant corner group including E. Forbes, and we brought back our outside linebackers and edge rushers. We got no pressure on LA Tech’s Kendall.
The defense started two possessions with two turnovers, and it looked like they would pick up with a dominant defense, but our offense had four turnovers, one was a house call, and three fumbles put our defense in extremely short fields.
Mississippi State would be one of the few SEC teams to lose this weekend had Tulu Griffin taken a kick with 7 minutes to go all the way across the opposing 25.
If Mississippi State played like they did in the first 5 minutes where they get 2 takeaways and 2 touchdowns or the last 7 minutes where they played lights out defense, drove down the field twice, had an amazing kick return turned touchdown 3 plays later, and a blocked kick to seal the win, THEN Mississippi State would be undefeated.
Unfortunately, you can’t win a game against Alabama only playing well for 12 minutes.
As for me, I’m just going to hope that LA Tech wins their conference, and it was actually just a good opponent. I hope it isn’t just shit play from the Dawgs
Notable Players:
Offense:
J. Marks – 12 Carries for 71 yards, 2 TDs (9 Receptions 27 yards, 1 Rec TD)
Marks rarely gets the call in the air raid system, but today he delivered time and time again. It felt like every time he got the rock, he pushed the chains, crossed the plane, or got chunk yardage.
As for his receiving game, he can’t do much when he’s getting a late dump off in the flat with defenders bearing down on him and his blockers downfield working routes.
Defense:
A. Brule – 7 Tackles, 1 Sack 1 Stuff
Brule is the heart of the defense in the wake of E Thompson moving on to the NFL. This kid is the chief of the blitz. Any play where the opposing QB gets running, it is almost always the New Orleans native, Brule, chasing them down.
While today was quieter than you’d expect, he is in a new role without Thompson here, and I expect he’ll get moving in the right direction as the season progresses.
Coach’s Seat: Warm but not quite hot…yet.
